Get your sign off my lawn!
While tonight is the much anticipated debate between President Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney I thought we could also focus on elections of Minneapolis. Check out this video of DFL candidate, Blong Yang who is running for Hennepin County Commissioner in District two. He states that old school yard signs as a candidate promoter and vote-getter are just well...outdated. His supporters have pushed the campaign in a new direction by using local artists and music videos to promote the message of the candidate. This way, there is a new wave of political media arising and it promotes a sense of community by including the local artists. It also grabs the attention of young and inexperienced voters. After watching the newscast, what are your reactions? Should politics be moving in this direction? Does it appeal to the older generation? What are your thoughts?

Personally, I think this is the right direction to go in. The biggest demographic that politicians need to reach are younger voters. This should help him get his name out there which is half the battle.
I don't think that this will appeal to older voters, as in, over 50 for a couple different reasons. One, it's rap music, and that is typically not a genre that older people relate to. And two, I'm sure that YouTube is going to be the main viewing tool of this video, and most of YouTube's viewers are younger people.
I do think that it's a good idea to campaign this way if it's done well. I think that Yang did a really nice job because the song is catchy, but not annoying, and the musicians are very talented. This technique could easily go very wrong though, and sound more like a cheesy jingle, than a cool campaign song.
I agree with both Erik and Meghan. I think that the idea is well thought out and moving in the right direction, but it still will most likely miss the older generation of voters. If he had a campaign of both old-school signs and new media, I feel his campaign would be the most successful-until the older generation is completely technology literate and interested.
I don't think this will apeal to the older generation either. It is creative and innovative but not the right dirction for the older crowd. Even as a young voter I didn't find it the most appealing thing but I like that he is using local artists so I give the guy props for that.
