Obama and Mitt Romney declare a truce on 9-11

I found this article on Huffington post that describes the activities that the Presidential nominees partook in on 9-11-12.

What is your opinion on their "truce?"

Do you think that instead of insulting one another, they actually just end up trying to "one-up" each other in the patriotism department?

Do you think they are taking advantage of the media on this day? and if so, how?

I agree with your usage of quotations in reference to their truce. I'm glad they went out and acknowledged 9/11 as they did, however, I do agree a small portion of their actions may have been an attempt to one-up each other.
But, I do not believe they took advantage of the media. The article said tv commercials were not aired and neither Romney nor Obama directly campaigned that day. Granted others did campaign in honor of the candidates, but would either candidate want to completely stop campaigning for the day? Maybe the situation is no longer as sensitive since it's been over a decade, and the candidates feel it isn't inappropriate to continue campaigning. Or maybe they just did not have that much control of the campaigning themselves. What do you think?

I believe that they decided to have this "truce" to indeed have the "one-up" on each other as you put it. I think that if one of them were to not withdraw from the "truce" and keep using the negative ads that it would have a detrimental aspect on his image, and from the chapters we read, we can easily say that image is everything to a candidate. Also I believe that they chose this date and time purely for strategical reasons, in that because it's such a historical event, and that people look up to their leader for guidance (especially with it being an election year), that this "truce" will receive more air time with the public than if it were aired on another day.
