Hamline old main protest

I think by now most of us are aware of the old main protest that many Hamline students are organizing for Tuesday the 25th at 11:00. This came in the wake of a mass email from president Hansen about Hamline's stance on the controversial marriage amendment. The university took a neutral stance on the issue and this angered a lot of students. So the two questions i want to ask are what are your views on this protest and how do you think social media affected the response and organization of the event. Personally i think this just shows the power that social media has as just a mass organizer. Regardless of your view of the protest, it only took hours for hundreds of people to know about it. I'm curious to see how parties and interest groups use this power to their advantage in the future.

I'm really glad you posted something about this as I was about to because I think this is a very important issue for us as students, especially first years, and how some recent events may affect our perception on Hamline University. I personally believe that it was not a good idea for the faculty or president Hudson to make such a stance so public, as even if they took an opposing or in favor stance, and made it public, I think in any way it is a lose-lose situation in that they would receive extreme attention from the media. I was slightly disappointed with their choice myself but I can clearly understand why Hamliine University would take a neutral stance. We as a Hamline community believe in open minds and it clearly says in the letter from the president that they allow for civic discourse and engagement. The issue to me seems to be whether or not Hamline students want to represent their school in the fashion the school ultimately wants to teach us to do as far as our beliefs. The rally to me, is more of discourse than engagement. What is this type of behavior going to do? Hamline as a University is not going to change or effect the amendment as much as its community actively voting will. I think there are better ways to take action than this rally.

I agree with the stance the University took. While I am in favor of marriage equality, I do not want my educational institution taking stances on political issues. If I were on the other side of this political issue, I'd be furious if the university came out in opposition to the amendment. I'd also assume that students that are opposed to this amendment would be furious if the university came out in support of it. As long as this is a contemporary political issue, I'd prefer that Hamline University facilitates debate as opposed to participating.
