The Bradley Effect

We discussed the Bradley Effect a little bit in class. Essentially the concept refers to Tom Bradley, a black man lost the 1982 California Governor's race even though he was ahead in some voter polls. The Bradley effect says that some voters tell pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for a black candidate, yet, on election day, vote for the white opponent.

What do you think about the Bradley Effect is a legitimate concern, especially with Obama appearing to be ahead in the polls right now?

This article warns about the Bradley Effect

This one argues that the Bradley Effect does not need to be worried about

I've been hearing alot about the Bradley Effect among many baby boomers and seniors. My parents and grandparents truly believe that McCain might win for this very reason. I don't believe so. I am not denying the fact that racism or skepticism still exists in America. It just seems that this is a different political election. Citizens should feel more obliged to speak the truth about who they're voting for--even through phone polls--more than ever. Obama may not win by a great margin, but he is definitely not going to lose because of under-the-radar voters who will slyly vote for McCain on election day.

If you look at the number of people that Obama is drawing around the world and in the states, it is impressive. Despite this the Bradley effect needs to be discussed so that people won't be affected by it. A New York Times article printed in today's paper discussed how Mr. Pisano's friends won't vote for Obama because of his race. I'm not saying that people should vote for Obama just to prove that their not racist. Being conscious of the Bradley effect will help race not affect their vote.

I believe though to an extent having a black african american president will truly help international issues with the united states.
